We are holding a Student Mental Health Summit on Tuesday 29 March. With a diverse range of speakers and workshop leaders from mental health organisations, universities, colleges and support services across Scotland the event offers a whole day dedicated to talking about what we can do to better support student mental health.
We will be hearing from the Queen Margaret University about how they have implemented their Student Mental Health Agreement and how they are ensuring students don’t get left behind. Fife College will be telling us about their counselling pilot project and the University of the West of Scotland will discuss how they have successfully implemented policy and training to address students in crisis.
We will also hear from the University of Edinburgh’s Health and Wellbeing Society who have recently launched the “Be Aware, Be There” campaign.
Staff from NUS Scotland will also be offering expertise on Student Accommodation and the impact this can have on mental health. We will also be updating you about the work we have been doing on self-management and ending stigma and discrimination.
Other external speakers will touch on sleep management, mindfulness, physical activity and current research into student mental health. Drugs and sexual health charity Crew will be offering a workshop on stress and substance use- touching on the rise in the use of study aids or ‘nootrpoics’.
National Youth Work charity LGBT Youth Scotland will also be delivering a workshop on LGBT Mental Health, Wellbeing and Barriers to Education. There will also be some representatives from the LGBT National Youth Council in attendance who are going to be leading on a national youth campaign addressing LGBT Mental Health.
We expect student support staff, student officers and other students to all be in attendance.
